Healing Our Healthcare

The state of health care in this country is at a critical point. Healing our healthcare system should be a top priority for everyone involved. Increasing costs, decreasing benefits and a faltering economy are taking their toll on the health care industry. It is sick, and getting sicker, and so is the general population.

Everyone knows that the healthcare system is broken and needs to be healed. Reports from the World Health Organization and others show that:

-The U.S. spends nearly twice as much as any other country on per capita healthcare costs.

-Yet, the U.S. is ranked 37th in the world in quality of healthcare.

-The U.S. is ranked 42nd in the world for longevity.

-We are dead last in healthcare among the industrial nations.

-Estimates are that about 40% of the population do not have health insurance.

It is not about merely spending more massive amounts of money; there is already enough money in play to solve the problem. It is also not about "universal insurance," insuring more people or gaining "more access" to the same existing, expensive, less than effective system alone, without first overhauling the delivery system for greater efficiency.

Healing our healthcare system would involve the creation of an effective wellness and prevention system as well as the Medical/Hospital system, for greater effectiveness with decreased costs. In addition, it is not about the government alone solving the problem, but instead a partnership, where the government, private business, and non-profit organizations act together, with the government providing a leadership role and incentives for private solutions. We need to get creative and re-think the system, where it is spent, and how to best reallocate our resources. Besides the health insurance and access problems, we must focus on the delivery system as well.

Most discussions to date, and most political solutions proposed, have focused on the 35-50% of the population that do not have health insurance or have limited access to traditional medical care. Yet in spite of nearly half not using the existing system, our country still spends double per capita on heatlh care while ranked dead last in quality. So, merely insuring more people or increasing access to this expensive, ineffective system alone may be doomed to fail.

Healing Our Healthcare has been created by the Advanced Health Research Institute to help address these issues with a different approach to health care. This approach not only addresses the health insurance issue and greater access to healthcare for all, but it also redesigns the healthcare delivery system and provides incentives for individuals, employers, employees and insurance carriers to focus more on prevention and wellness than on expensive disease management. This approach is rooted in evaluation, prevention, health maintenance, and discovering and dealing with the root causes of disease before major problems develop.

This new approach is less expensive, both in financial terms and in the toll it takes on the patient, than treatment after a major problem has manifested itself.
